God calls us to seek wisdom and spiritual discernment

SHINY ON THE OUTSIDE, ROTTEN WITHIN

Proverbs 26:23–24 “Like a coating of silver dross on earthenware are fervent lips with an evil heart. Enemies disguise themselves with their lips, but in their hearts they harbour deceit.”

Not everyone who sounds supportive is truly for us. Some people cover malice with smooth words, just as cheap pottery was sometimes coated with silver dross to make it look valuable. It shines on the outside but is worthless inside.

Leaders, families, and churches, all face this danger—people who appear loyal but are motivated by self-interest, jealousy, or deceit. If we fail to discern, we may trust the wrong people and suffer the consequences.

God calls us to seek wisdom and spiritual discernment. Instead of being swayed by flattery, we must test ACTIONS, CONSISTENCY, and FRUIT.

True friendship and genuine support will stand the test of time. Those with ulterior motives will eventually reveal themselves through inconsistency, betrayal, or silence when things get difficult.

When people are truly for you, they don’t disappear when circumstances change or when standing with you comes at a cost. Their loyalty is steady because it’s rooted in love and truth. But those who only pretended to support you will show their true colours when the pressure is on—they may flatter when things are easy, but they won’t remain when sacrifice or courage is required.

That’s why Scripture calls us to discernment: to value depth over charm, and character over charisma. Genuine relationships are proven not in moments of celebration, but in seasons of hardship.

Prayer:
Father, give me discernment to recognise those who are genuine and those who are deceptive. Protect me from being misled by flattering words or false support. Help me to surround myself with people of integrity, and make me one who is genuine in heart and action. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Have a wonderful weekend. God bless and lots’a love,
Warren
