British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has been injured in a car crash in Nigeria, which killed two members of his team. The former world champion was a passenger in a vehicle that collided with a stationary truck on a major expressway in Ogun State, near Lagos
Anthony Joshua, the British boxer and former world heavyweight champion, is “stable” in hospital after a car crash that killed two other passengers in Nigeria.
The former two-time world heavyweight champion, 36, was travelling in the back of a black Lexus when the SUV hit a stationary truck on a busy highway in Makun, Ogun State.
Joshua, who is the son of British-Nigerian parents, suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment, while two passengers in the vehicle died, according to officials. Another passenger was also injured.
Officials suspect that the vehicle that Joshua was in crashed into a stationary lorry vehicle while overtaking at speed.
According to Olusegun Ogungbemide, spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps, preliminary investigations indicated the vehicle was “travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit on the corridor, lost control during an overtaking maneuver and crashed into a stationary truck,” which was by the side of the road.
The two people that were killed were Joshua’s close friends and team members according to promoter matchroom.
