The Supreme Court has cleared FAST Party Secretary, Va’aaoao Salu Alofipo to compete in the upcoming general election.

The legal challenge was brought by Caretaker Deputy PM, Tuala Tevaga Iosefo Ponifasio, who had questioned the eligibility of the two matais who endorsed Va’aaoao’s candidacy.

Samoa’s Electoral Act requires that the two nominees must also be active members of the constituency who serve monotaga.

The decision delivered today means the electoral constituency of Gagaemauga 1 will have four candidates:

Vaaaoao Salumalo Alofipo
Tuala Toiaivao Tevaga Iosefo  Ponifasio Tevaga Mikaele Ah Lam
Lauano Mulivai Lauano

Other decisions delivered this afternoon disqualified two candidates from the Faleata 2 constituency, leaving Leatinuu Wayne So’oialo uncontested.

Muaaufaalele Mary Taeu of FAST and Ulugia Elon Betham of HRPP were both found to be ineligible, having not met the monotaga requirements of the Electoral Act.

Also delivered this afternoon is Samoas first woman MP to enter Parliament under the temporary measures – Faaulusau Rosa Duffy Stowers was cleared to run for the Gagaifomauga 3 constituency against FAST Party Leader Laaulialemalietoa Leuatea.
