By: Jasmine Netzler-Iose, Government Press. One more week closure has been confirmed for all schools across the country to ensure safety and protection of Samoa’s children from the increasing spread of dengue fever.

That is the official announcement made on Friday afternoon by Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Education and Culture, Ae’au Chris Hazelman on a live broadcast.

The decision applies to ALL schools across Samoa including government, private, mission schools from pre-schools, primary, colleges and universities.

The extended period of this closure will be from Monday 04 August to Friday 08 August 2025 as part of on-going efforts by the government to ensure the safety of Samoa’s young people from the spread of dengue fever that has claimed the lives of four young children.

According to Ae’au this was a discussion that has come about following discussions with the National Emergency Operation Centre and Cabinet.

The C.E.O. asks the country for patience regarding this situation as it is critical to ensure our children are safe during this outbreak.

Aeau has also urged parents continue to communicate and liaise closely with schools to ensure student’s assessments and exercises are uplifted from their respective schools.

Many schools have been very active – communicating with all parents using social media, notices and emails to ensure student work is disseminated, and minimise disruption of the school calendar.

Aeau is calling on parents to ensure they continue to support the schools by abiding to requests to uplift student’s work during this time of necessary closures.

FUMIGATION EFFORTS

Fumigation efforts started on Monday this week to school campuses around the country including Savai’i.

Ae’au expressed his thanks to all schools while these necessary efforts are being carried out but, also revealed that there are still several compounds that have yet to be fumigated due to weather conditions.

These include schools in some areas including Uafato, Anoamaa and Vaimauga but, stressed there will be time that fumigation initiatives will be carried out.

Bad conditions say Ae’au impacts negatively on fumigation efforts.
