Wed 2 June 2021, Savaii, Samoa. In the second such incident within a matter of days, Police and FESA are responding to a fisherman swept out to sea in Sagone, Savaii.
Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner Tanuvasa Petone Mauga said the call came in on the evening of Independence Day, after three men went out fishing, and two returned after the third was swept out to sea.
“FESA and Police were alerted last night (Tuesday 1st June) so they responded but it was too dark. We went back this morning and the operation required divers, so divers are sweeping around the area today,” said Tanuvasa.
Police Commissioner Su’a Fuiavailiili Egon Keil calls on anyone going out to engage in any type of ocean activity to be more cautious.
“As first responders we strongly recommend anyone engaging in any type of ocean activity to be extra careful and ensure all safety measures are taken before and during the water activity;
“That means you have to be aware of your environment and be aware of your own strength and capability, additionally, you should have a plan and the appropriate floating devices at the ready,” cautions the Police Commissioner.
“A little preparation and personal awareness may save your life”, adds Su’a.
