03 July 2020 Apia Samoa. Justice Leiataualesa Daryl Clarke yesterday ordered the immediate release of a man whose prison term was supposed to have ended on the 6th of November 2016.
Assistant Attorney General Magele Leone Sua in response to questions from Samoa Global News, confirmed that Sio Agafili was ordered to be immediately released.
Sio or Galu Agafili was convicted and sentenced on the 19th December 2008 for burglary, theft, and grevious bodily harm.
It is uncertain why Agafili was kept in police custody beyond his prison term. Prosecution could not comment on why Sio Agafili was retained.
Asked for a response, Commissioner of Police and Prison Fuiavailiili Sua Egon Keil said he could not elaborate as the matter was before the Courts.
