As a lead up to celebrating the first 50 years of Diplomatic Ties between Samoa and his country the Peoples’ Republic of Chinas’ Ambassador to Samoa Fei Minxing tuition scholarship for National University of Samoa (NUS) students has doubled to 40.

Known as the Chinese Ambassadors’ Scholarship the financial assistance are deposited directly to the NUS to pay for the student’s tuition.

It was initiated in 2022 with an average of 20 students every semester. Each scholarship ranges from $500 to $2000.

In announcing the recipients Ambassador Fei reiterated the crucial role of education not only for China but especially Samoa.

“Your dream to success is not only a dream of your family and community, but also the best wishes of the Chinese Embassy and NUS. We hope that you join those who have been awarded before, complete your study with full effort and make do contribution to the well being of Samoan people and China-Samoa friendship,” he says.

“To help more students with their dreams, it’s my pleasure to announce that the number of Chinese Ambassador Scholarship awardees at NUS will be doubled from Semester 2 of 2025. Taking this opportunity, I would like to thank Prof. Amosa and your team for cooperation.”

Aside from the scholarships, Ambassador Fei had also announced that 13 teachers and students will travel to China this June to attend the “Chinese Bridge” program.
He stated that this is the first time that the Chinese Embassy and NUS jointly sponsor Samoan teachers and students for a “China Travel”.

“Your journey will open a window to a nation of innovation, history, culture, and diversity,” he says.

“I hope that you make the best use of it, seeing the real China, enjoying your time with Chinese peers and sharing your gains with Samoan people. ‘Always remember that opportunities are very hard to come by, and if you get it, grab it with both hands and make the most of it,’ Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa once said.”

NUS Vice Chancellor Tuifuisa’a Patila Amosa says that as they celebrate the 29 students who have been successful in their scholarship applications, from Semester 2, 2024 and Semester 1, 2025, she reiterates the university’s gratitude and thanks to Ambassador Fei Mingxing, the Chinese Embassy staff and the People’s Republic of China for your generosity.

“To conclude, I wish to share a quote from Confucius, as a reminder to all students; he wrote “Education breeds confidence, Education breeds hope. Hope breeds peace,” continued the Vice-Chancellor.
