The Government of the Independent State of Samoa notes with concern the recent launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile by the People’s Republic of China into the Pacific Ocean on July 6 2026.
Samoa was informed through the diplomatic channels of the missile launch post event and provided further explanation that the exercise was done in accordance with international law, it was not directed at any particular country and forms part of China’s routine defence training and capability requirements.
Samoa has a longstanding partnership with China who is also a dialogue partner with the Pacific Islands Forum. Given the implications of such activities on peace and security in the region, the importance of timely, considered, and transparent communications cannot be overstated.
Like other Pacific nations, Samoa remains firmly committed to the principles of the Ocean of Peace Declaration and the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty as they reflect our shared aspiration of our Blue Pacific that is defined by peace, stability and respect for the sovereignty and security of all Pacific peoples.
The Pacific should never be viewed as an arena for strategic competition but as a centre for unity for the peaceful resolution of disputes and a zone of peace.
Our longstanding friendship with all our international partners reflects our commitment to promoting peace regional stability and constructive engagement with all nations.
