7 August 2021 Apia Samoa. The Chief Executive Officer for the Ministry of Women, Afamasaga Faauiga Palepua Mulitalo, has been relieved of her duties effective Friday 6 August 2021.

This was confirmed by the Minister for Women Community and Social Development (MWCSD) Hon Leota Laki Lamositele Sio who said Afamasaga’s contract ended on the 1st of July 2021 and was granted a temporary extension by the Caretaker government for the interim period.

The Minister said the decision to end the CEO’s contract was in line with CEO contract terms and renewal processes.

“We are basically following the policy that a CEO retires when the contract of employment ends, and then reapplies when the post is advertised,” said the Minister.

“The usual recruitment process that is in place, would now be followed”, he added.

A public servant for over 33 years, Afamasaga began her career with the Ministry of Finance, where she served for 18 years before moving to MWCSD where she has been for 12 years, the last three as CEO.

Also a senior member of the Samoa Institute of Accountants, Afamasaga’s role as CEO of MWCSD had included Chairing the Community Development Sector Steering Committee and overlooking Samoa’s commitments to international conventions such as CRPD (Rights of Persons with Disability), CEDAW (Elimination of Discrimination against Women) and CRC (Rights of the Child).

Afamasaga Chairs Community Sector Steering Committee, June 2021.
