The Supreme Court has found elected Member of Parliament, Fuimaono Teo Samuelu Atiifale guilty of six charges of bribery. Although two other bribery charges filed against him were dismissed, Fuimaono will not be able to run a general election in 10 years from the date of the decision, or three general elections from now.
The Supreme Court also found the FAST party petitioner Veletaloola Fuimaono Avauli guilty of five charges of bribery and treating with six charges of bribery dismissed and one withdrawn by leave.
The decision was handed down by Justice Vui Clarence Nelson and Justice Lesatele Rapi Vaai. Justice Vui told the Court there were 200 pages of transcripts he and Justice Lesatele Rapi had to examine.
“The Falealili 2 constituency Parliamentary Seat is now declared void and both the petitioner and respondent’s names will be entered into the corrupt practice list,” said Justice Vui.
Outside Court the FAST candidate told the media he is happy with the decision delivered by the Court despite being found guilty of bribery and treating charges.
“I’m thankful for the decision today even though I will not be able to run for another 15 years but I’m satisfied with the decision delivered today,” Veletaloola said.
