New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced a three day Level 3 lockdown for Auckland while the rest of New Zealand will be on Level 2 alert, following three positive community cases in South Auckland.
A mother, father and daughter all from the same household have tested positive in South Auckland and Prime Minister Arden says New Zealand will take the same approach it has taken in the past..
“Go hard and go early.. to avoid a wider spread and longer lockdown periods..”
In line with this cautionary approach the New Zealand Cabinet has approved lockdown of essential services only for Auckland, from Monday midnight to Wednesday midnight.
New Zealand’s Director General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield said the three family members who tested positive have been transferred to Auckland isolation facility while a fourth family member who tested negative remains at home under strict isolation under Public Health supervision.
The Public Health Director identified the aeas of interest as the Papatoetoe High School where the daughter is a student, LGS Sky Chefs as the workplace of the mother and a number of other places around Auckland now posted on their website for the public’s Information.
“There are over 1400 students at Papatoetoe High School and Dr Bloomfield confirms the school will be closed Monday and Tuesday.
“The daughter’s immediate classmates have been treated as close contacts as are a number of teachers,” said Dr Bloomfield.
New Zealand’s Public Health are setting up a pop-up testing facility at the High School over the next two days, specifically for students caregivers and staff.
Dr Bloomfield confirmed that the mother worked for LGS Sky Chefs, handling laundry of incoming flights.
“I can confirm that she is not involved in the handling of food at that employer…
“As we continue to explore all possible sources for these cases we will take a particular interest in this workplace because of its obvious connections to the border..” he says.
The father was a self-employed, and Dr Bloomfield asks the New Zealand public to check the dares and times of lsited places of interest around Auckland – including popular restaurants in New Plymouth and a few locations between Auckland and New Plymouth.
Dr Bloomfield asks the public to remain vigilant and keep up the hard work through precautionary measures such as hand sanitation, masks, distancing and updating their whereabouts on the contact tracing app.
