11 March, 2019. The Government of Japan once again reaffirmed its commitment to assisting the development of education in Samoa under its Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Project (GGP) through providing a grant formalised in a signing ceremony held today (March 11) at the Embassy of Japan in Apia for Auala Primary School in Savaii.
His Excellency Maugaoleatuolo Shinya Aoki signed over the grant of USD $89,224 (approximately SAT$226,000) to the President of the school committee Ta’avao Tiaina for a reconstruction project of eight new classrooms, a staff room and a library or computer lab.
The project aims to enhance the safety of the school’s physical structure and improve the learning environment of 109 students and countless future students.
The school’s existing two storey building is almost 45 years old and its run down conditions of the top floor causing perilous everyday access for the students.
Japan provides small and flexible grants to support development projects at the grassroots level through its GGP in line with the areas that of high priority in Samoa’s Strategy for Development for Samoa (SDS) which includes education.
So far, educational project estimated total value of (SAT$ 2.18m) have successfully secured funding within Japan’s financial year term April 2018- March 2019 under Japan’s GGP.
The Government of Japan welcomes further opportunities to work with the Government and the People of Samoa, with a view to strengthening the bonds of friendship and mutual understanding between the two countries.
