The downpour on Friday caused the Guadalupe River to rise as much as 25 feet in 45 minutes, sending cars, uprooted trees and other debris swirling through the brown water.

Water rescues have been taking place along the Guadalupe River since the flash floods Saturday.

While officials couldn’t confirm an exact number of those who remain unaccounted for, they said more than two dozen were still missing from a children’s summer camp.

City officials said Saturday that 27 girls from Camp Mystic, a private Christian riverside summer camp, are still missing.

Camp Mystic was hosting some 750 campers when the flooding struck. Officials said on Friday that some of those campers may be stranded and unable to call for help.

However, among the dead was Dick Eastland, the Director of Camp Mystic. His nephew Gardner Eastland confirmed the death in a Facebook post.

At least 32 fatalities have been reported so far, Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha said at a news conference Saturday afternoon.

The dead include 18 adults and 14 children. Five of the adults and three children are unidentified, Leitha said.

At least 27 people remained missing. Officials have conducted more than 160 air rescues, Leitha said in an earlier update.

In total, 850 uninjured and eight injured people have been rescued as of Saturday, he said.
