From 9th to 13th June 2025, libraries, archives, and memory institutions across the globe are commemorating International Archives and Library Week, recognising the vital role these institutions play in ensuring universal access to information, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering lifelong learning.
This year’s global theme, ‘Archives Are Accessible,’ represents more than a slogan—it is a bold commitment to transparency, inclusion, and the equitable sharing of knowledge. Accessibility is not just about technology—it is about the right for all people to engage with their history, to connect with identity, and to participate fully in the knowledge economy.
In his opening address, the Minister of Education and Culture Honourable Seuula Ioane Tuaau emphasised that “our archives and libraries are more than repositories of books and documents—they are the living memory of our people, guardians of our gagana, aganu’u, and fa’asinomaga.” He further highlighted the importance of access as a right and a responsibility: “Access to information is access to empowerment, and access to heritage is access to identity.”
The Minister reiterated that ensuring archives and libraries are accessible means creating inclusive spaces where young people can discover their roots, researchers can uncover truths, and every Samoan can feel connected to the journeys of our ancestors. He urged continued support and investment in both physical and digital archival services so that “no one is left behind, and our cultural and historical treasures remain accessible to all.”
To bring this vision to life, the Ministry of Education and Culture is hosting a week-long program filled with exhibitions, school performances, interactive tours, and hands-on workshops designed to engage and inspire. The opening ceremony took place on Monday, 9th June at 9:00am at the Culture and Arts Centre in Malifa, marking the start of vibrant activities for Upolu, which will continue until Wednesday, 11th June.
The celebrations then move to Savai’i for the final leg of the program on Thursday, 12th June, culminating in a closing ceremony on Friday, 13th June—affirming the Ministry’s commitment to providing equal opportunities for all Samoans to access and celebrate their cultural heritage.
