023 April 2019, By Salesa Seiuli, SRU. The ANZAC celebrations kick started today at Poutasi Field, Falealili with the inaugural ANZAC 7s Tournament.
The tournament was opened with ANZAC ceremonial formalities with an opening sermon and prayer followed by the “last post” bugle call while all in attendance observed a moment of silence.
The Samoan, Australian and New Zealand anthems were played respectively after.
Later the Australian High Commissioner’s representative address the audience, followed by an address from the Falealili Rugby Union Patron: Tuatagaloa Folasaitu Joe Annandale and finally an address from Returned Services Association (RSA) Samoa Inc. President: Tuala Joe Ponifasio who is also the ANZAC 7s Tournament Chairman.
The tournament was officially opened by Hon. Fuimaono Sam Te’o.
The tournament was a fantastic event bringing hordes of Falealili rugby fanatics to Poutasi to support their beloved village teams but also commemorate the Anzacs and the sacrifice they made for world peace.
By the end of the day, Vaovai 2 and Poutasi battled it out in a tough and close Cup Final match, final score 7-5 to Vaovai 2.
Congratulations to all participating teams in a marvellous day of Anzac sevens rugby in the heartland of Falealili Rugby.
Massive faamalo to RSA President: Tuala Joe Ponifasio and Lieutenant: Soi Lalovi Lome for a good well done in organising the tournament and teams.
