By Grant Chapman, Digital Sports Journalist RNZ. Wing Alofiana Khan-Pereira has scored a try double to propel NZ Warriors to a 32-6 win over Wests Tigers at Sydney’s Campbelltown Stadium.
Returning from a quad injury that had kept him sidelined for two games, the speedster of Samoan decent had the visitors out to an early double-figure lead.
The Warriors took toll of a man advantage, when former Warriors fan favourite Bunty Afoa – now with the Tigers – was sin-binned for a late tackle on Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad.
Soon after Khan-Pereira’s first try, centre Ali Leiataua also crossed and the Warriors extended their lead by 14-6 at halftime.
Back to full complement, Wests finished the first half strongly and threatened to close the margin further, when the Warriors spilt the ball from the second-half kickoff.
They survived and Khan-Pereira stretched the advantage with the next try. From the restart, hooker Wayde Egan scooted over for a try and the Warriors were never challenged again.
While the Tigers enjoyed an edge in possession and set completion, the11-2 linebreak count heavily favoured the Warriors. Those two Tigers breaks came in the dying moments, but could not alter the scoreline.
After losing three of their last four outings, the Warriors now face a kind run of games that may allow them to consolidate their standing on the NRL table.
Next Saturday, they face bottom-of-the-table St George Illawarra Dragons.
Khan-Pereira was born in Lismore, New South Wales. His mother is Indigenous Australian and Pakistani while his father is of Samoan and Māori descent.
His mother Sylvia has roots from the Bundjalung people. He moved to the Gold Coast at nine years of age where he attended rugby league nursery Keebra Park State High School and played junior rugby league for the Burleigh Bears.
Khan-Pereira is eligible to represent Queensland in State of Origin.
