Samoa Customs says the seizure follows months of targeted operations based on intelligence and profiling, the Ministry explains in a press release.
The 1,835 grams of methamphetamine is the third seizure of illicit drugs at Samoa’s borders this year. The estimated street value is $1.8 million tala according to authorities.
The drugs were concealed within four bags of rice from a personal consignment originating from the United States of America.
Samoa Customs identified the 46-year old male as the importer of the consignment.
“Both the seized illicit drugs and alleged importer have been handed over to the Samoa Police, Prisons and Correctional Services for further investigations.”
The Chief Executive Officer for Samoa’s Ministry of Customs and Revenue, Fonoti Talaitupu Lia Taefu, commended the diligence and work of officers who were involved in the operation.

“Proactive intelligence-led operations is crucial for protecting Samoa’s borders and its people,” said the Head of Samoa Customs.
Fonoti says the operation that had led to close to 2kg of drugs being intercepted highlights Samoa Customs’ commitment to combating the trafficking of illicit drugs.
“This has protected the community from about $1.8million tala worth of drugs from entering the streets.”

“This seizure is another clear example of the importance of vigilance, pro-activeness and intelligence in the fight against transnational crime,” said Fonoti.
“By preventing these harmful substances from reaching our communities, we are protecting families, safeguarding lives, and upholding Samoa’s safety and wellbeing.”
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity in the community or at the borders.
“Keeping Samoa clean and meth free is a collective effort,” said the Samoa Police Commissioner.
“Those who are involved in drugs and distribution of drugs do not care about anyone but themselves..”
“We urge the public to continue supporting our efforts of keeping Samoa meth clean.”
“See it, Report it!”
