The Marist Saint Joseph’s Sports Club annual international sevens competition has been confirmed for 15-16 February 2019 at ACP Marist Stadium, Lotopa.

The tournament, now in its 31st year, promises to bring rugby action from the top local sides as well as international teams from New Zealand, Australia and neighbouring Fiji.

The Marist Auckland side has won 3 years in a row, and are expected to back this year to defend their title.  Local clubs Moataa, Vaiala, Apia, SCOPA, Tepatasi and Marist St Josephs are sure to attract the crowds as loyal fans await to see if the 3 year drought would come to an end.

The women’s tournament was launched in 2018 for the first time as a new fixture into the annual Marist Sevens event, and expected to attract more local teams.

Tournament Director Fata Brian Kaio said the Women’s competition is set to expand this year with 10 teams and an increase in the grand prize from $3000 to $5000 tala.

“Three teams from New Zealand have been confirmed for the Womens comp: Auckland Samoa (Defending Champions), Te Tai Tokerau (Coached by former New Zealand Black Fern, Ms. Rawinia Everitt) and Christchurch Womens Rugby that will be led by Sui Pauaraisa.”

“The purpose is to create a platform of quality competition for Women’s Sevens Rugby and opportunities for women empowerment and gender equality.”

Grand prizes for the overall winners of SAT$20,000 for the Men’s Division and SAT$5,000 for the Women’ Division  have been announced with entrance fees of SAT$2,000 and SAT$1000 consecutively.

The tournament organisers said, “Our prepararions for the 31st Marist International Sevens is well underway. We welcome back our loyal partners, and look to forming new relationships with additional sponsors coming on board this year.”

Registration is SAT$2000 for men’s and SAT$1000 for women’s teams.
