Samoa’s 19-year-old weightlifter Anoni Faumui has done Samoa proud, ranked 6th overall after the competition for the women’s 58kg category in her debut in Glasgow.
The young weightlifting talent has made an impressive start to her Commonwealth Games journey with an easy Top 10 finish.
She lifted 82kg in the snatch and 95kg in the clean and jerk, giving her a combined total of 177kg and earning her a place in the Top 10 of all Commonwealth nations.
SASNOC President and President of Samoa Weightlifting Federation, Tuaopepe Asiata Jerry Wallwork says finishing eighth at her first ever outing in one of the biggest international sporting stages in the world, is a proud achievement for the young athlete.
“To achieve this at her age at the Commonwealth Games is an encouraging result and an important milestone in her sporting career,” said Tuaopepe.
“Her performance reflects the hard work and dedication she has put into her training and shows great promise for the future,” added Tuaopepe.
Team Samoa secured its first medal of the Glasgow Games with the silver medal by weightlifting golden boy, John Lautafi Tafi for the men’s 71kg category.
Tafi lifted 142 kg in the snatch, and smashed the Games record of 172kg in the clean-and jerk to finish second. Nauru’s Ezekial Moses lifted 140kg in the snatch, and 170kg in the clean and jerk, for third place.
