Receiving God’s Word with Humility, Faith, and Obedience

RECEIVING GOD’S WORD

1Thessalonians 2:13 “And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe.”

When the Thessalonian believers heard the apostolic message, they didn’t treat it as merely Paul’s opinion or another human philosophy. They received it for what it truly was, the Word of God. As they believed it, God’s Word began its transforming work in their lives.

This doesn’t mean that every preacher today speaks with the same authority as the apostles. The apostles were uniquely commissioned by Christ to lay the foundation of the church, and their teaching has been preserved for us in the Scriptures. Every preacher, pastor, and teacher today must be tested by the written Word of God.

Sadly, not everyone who stands behind a pulpit faithfully proclaims God’s truth. Some distort the gospel, twist Scripture, or preach messages designed to entertain, manipulate, or enrich themselves. Jesus warned that false prophets would come, and Paul urged believers to test everything and hold on to what is good (1Thessalonians 5:21). Like the Bereans in Acts 17:11, we should carefully examine the Scriptures to see whether what we are being taught is true.

But when God’s Word is faithfully preached in its proper context, we should receive it with humility, reverence, and obedience. We aren’t simply listening to a man. We are hearing the voice of God through His written Word. And as we submit to it, God’s Word continues its powerful work in those who believe.

As you open your Bible or listen to faithful biblical preaching, come with a teachable heart. Receive God’s Word, believe it, obey it, and allow it to shape every area of your life.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me Your perfect and trustworthy Word. Give me wisdom to recognise faithful teaching and discernment to reject false doctrine. Help me to receive Your Word with humility, faith, and obedience. May Your truth continue its transforming work in my heart so that I become more like Jesus each day. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
