With just six days remaining until the Commonwealth Games begin in Glasgow, Scotland, 19 athletes, accompanied by five coaches, five team managers, medical and management staff, as well as a delegation from the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, will depart next week to represent Samoa at the two-week event.
In his keynote address, Prime Minister Laaulialemalietoa encouraged Team Samoa to plant a seed that will inspire future generations of Samoan athletes.

“Ia manuia la outou malaga, vaai sesi i lavea ia fo’i mai ma ni ‘ai o le faamoemoe, ae mo le lumanai ia outou alofagia le tulaga lea ua fa’ataoto ai fuafuaga a le malo.”
This will be Samoa’s smallest-ever team to compete at the Commonwealth Games.
Team Samoa will contest five sports: athletics, swimming, weightlifting, boxing and judo.
Samoa made its Commonwealth Games debut in 1974 and, over more than five decades of competition, is ranked 23rd out of 74 nations on the all-time medal table.
To date, Samoa has won six gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games.
Weightlifters Sanele Mao and Iuniarra Sipaia have been named Team Samoa’s flag bearers for the opening ceremony.
Based on this official team list, there are 17 athletes, not 44.
