19 Year Old School Student Pleads Guilty to Rape

Translated from FaaSamoa. A 19 year old high school student pleaded guilty to three counts of rape before the Supreme Court of Samoa.

The youth first appeared before the Courts two weeks ago, and was given time to find a lawyer.

This morning he appeared again during criminal mentions before Justice Fepuleai Ameperosa Roma.

He was represented by Counsel Faimalomatumua Mathew Lemisio, who confirmed the guilty pleas to all three charges of rape.

The Prosecution said in Court that the victim was a 16 year old girl who had visited Samoa with her family during the festive season.

The Court heard that the incidents occurred at the beginning  last month, in January.

The Court has granted name suppression for both the victim and the accused.

The media were warned to not report any facts that may lead to the identity of the youths involved including the high school the boy had been attending.

April 12th has been set for sentencing.

Justice Fepuleai told the accused that this is when the Courts would weigh up the submissions from his lawyer with those of Prosecution and a report from the Probation Unit, before handing down its decision.

“O le aso lea o le a folasia ai se talosaga faatauanau a lau loia faapea foi ma talosaga a leoleo mo se faasalaga amata, ae maise o se lipoti mai le ofisa nofo vaavaaia, ma o le a fofogaina ai foi le faaiuga a le Faamasinoga mo se faasalaga.”
