A 17-year-old student from Savai‘i has shared an emotional story of perseverance after receiving a Government Foundation Scholarship to study at the University of the South Pacific (USP).
Nineteen students across Samoa were awarded the Government Foundation Scholarships this year, plus 10 Undergraduate students to continue their degrees.
The scholarships support students to continue their studies at tertiary institutions, helping them develop skills and contribute to the nation’s development.
Margaret Faapuea Mose is one of the 19 Foundation Scholarship recipients. She graduated from Palauli College last year and is currently studying Foundation Business at the University of the South Pacific, Savai‘i Centre.
Margaret is the daughter of Mose and Philomena and she has three siblings; one sister and two brothers. She is from the village of Faala in Palauli, Savai‘i.
During the scholarship ceremony, Margaret spoke about the challenges her family has faced and how the scholarship for her, means more than just financial support.
“Today, I stand before you with a heart full of gratitude,” she said.
Speaking to Samoa Global News after the ceremony, Margaret shared that life became very difficult after her father passed away several years ago. Around the same time, her mother began living with paralysis, adding further hardship for the family.
“My journey to this moment has not been easy. Life has tested me in many ways that I never expected at such a young age..
“A few years ago, my father passed away. After his passing, life became even more difficult for my family and me..” Margaret shared.
Despite these challenges, Margaret remained determined to continue her education.
“Receiving this scholarship means more to me than words can express. It is not only an investment in my education, but it is also an investment in the dreams my parents had for me..”
She also expressed gratitude to the Government for supporting foundation students, saying the scholarship offers hope and opens doors for young people who have dreams but face significant challenges.
“To the government and all those who make these scholarships possible, thank you for believing in our potential. Your support will shape our futures and allow us to contribute positively to our communities and to our country,” she said.
Margaret also acknowledged the sacrifices of her family, especially her mother, who continues to encourage her to stay strong and keep moving forward despite her condition.
“My mother taught me something very powerful – when life becomes difficult, you do not give up. You keep going..”
Margaret acknowledged her fellow recipients and said every scholarship student carries their own story of struggle and perseverance behind their success.
“This opportunity reminds us that our stories, our struggles, and our perseverance matter..
“Let us honour this scholarship by working hard, staying humble, and using our education to serve others,” she said.
Margaret concluded her message with a reflection on faith, encouraging others to trust in God as they pursue their dreams.
Quoting Proverbs 3:5–6, she said:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
