Government’s financial contribution to the 2024 CHOGM – the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting later this year in October is set to be increased by $20 million tala, according to the Budget Estimates tabled in the House on Tueseday morning.

Initially, $20 million tala was budgetd, however, the Minister of Finance in his Budget Address for the fiscal year 2024/2025 announced the additional funds to be allocated towards Samoa’s preparations for CHOGM 2024 increasing the Government contribution to $40 million tala.

“The new budget is allocating another $20 million tala for the hosting of this event in terms of catering, accommodation, accreditation, receptions, security, health and emergency services, communication and I.T. services, transport and venue,” said Minister Lautimuia Afoa Uelese Vaai.

“The CHOGM in October 2024 presents a significant opportunity for Samoa. Our preparation efforts are focused on enhancing infrastructure and governmental services to ensure that Samoa is well-equipped to host this prestigious international event.”

The meeting is expected to ‘boost our economy’ as it attracts international visitors and investment, and in turn benefitting Samoa’s private sector and promoting local businesses, he added.

Lautimuia reminded that the, “CHOGM theme is focused on resilience, a unifying approach that transcends the humanitarian, development, human rights, and peace and security pillars.”

And ‘examining all the key pillars of the Commonwealth through a resilience lens’, the Government is ‘preparing for immediate challenges and creating a stable and secure environment that fosters long-term economic growth’.

“This approach ensures that our investments in infrastructure and services contribute to sustainable development and economic prosperity for Samoa,” said the Minister.

CHOGM

The 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, is the 27th Meeting of heads of the Commonwealth.

It is scheduled to take place in Samoa from 21st to 25th October and is expected to bring to our shores more than 50 heads of commonwealth nations including his Majesty King Charles the Head of the Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth is made up of 56 countries and 2.5 billion people.

This year’s theme is ‘One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth’.
