15 year-old Girl Found, but Two Young Boys Declared Missing

26 May 2024 Apia Samoa. Vaaitino Lauina, a 15 year-old girl from the villages of Saasaai and Nuu-Fou, declared missing from her home on Wednesday morning 22 May 2024 at 10:00am was returned and reunited with her family on Friday, the Samoa Police had announced.

However, in the past 24 hours, two more young boys have been declared missing by Police on the Samoa Police Prisons and Corrections Services social media page.

Amaketo Seuga, 16, of Faleula, was announced missing on Saturday afternoon, and a few hours later, 11 year old Liva (Ropati) Anesone was declared missing.

At the time of publication on Sunday evening, Police had not lifted the Missing Persons Notice for either of the two separate cases.

Liva (Ropati) Anesone, 11, of Vaimoso-Uta and Amaketo Seuga, 16, of Faleula.

Amaketo Seuga, 16, was last seen on Thursday night, 23rd May 2024 “after having dinner with his family” at their home in Faleula.

According to the Missing Persons Notice, the 11th Grader at Sagaga College “was wearing a white t-shirt and black shorts that reached above his knees”.

As for 11-yrar-old Liva (Ropati) Anesone, Police say he was last seen at his home “between 12pm and 5pm on Friday 24th May 2024”.

“He was last seen wearing a grey t-shirt and a maroon short.”

The declaration of children and teenagers under Missing Person reports has become a regular occurrence in Samoa with a notable increase since the beginning of this year.

Some of the Missing Persons announcements involving children.

In all cases thus far, the Samoa Police had subsequently announced that the children had been safely returned to their homes.

However the question begs as to whether a more in-depth investigation needs to be launched into the reasons behind each “disappearance”.

In all cases to date, the public are asked for information which could lead to locating the missing children, however, when they are found, an any explanation as to what had actually happened is not offered.

With cases of abuse against children being called each week during Supreme Court criminal mentions of the Samoa Courts, and the Samoa Victim Support Group receiving children each week into their care, it may be time to take an in-depth assessment of “missing person reports” involving children.

Are some of them running away from abuse, and the Missing Persons system is just returning them to that situation?

Whatever the case may be, it is hoped that in the absence of a formal Child Social Services in Samoa, that there is an assessment of children’s safety and well-being before they are returned.
